The Catholic Sentinel expands on Melaku’s story of fierce determination for education and opportunity and the incredible examples shown by his family members of sacrifice and hard work, as well as his plans to use his education to benefit his country in the future. We are all so proud!

The Oregonian ran a front page story on Melaku on June 5th, 2013. In 2009, Melaku arrived in the U.S. from Ethiopia, not knowing English. In just four short years, he became an accomplished math and science scholar with a full-ride Gates Millennium scholarship to his first-choice university, Johns Hopkins. He accomplished this with a fierce and constant dedication to learning English and to his studies. He worked very hard, following the example set by his father,  to improve, achieve, take advantage of opportunities and pursue education, while demonstrating an incredible work ethic, determination, and dedication. Congratulations, Melaku – and the whole family – on your achievements!

*Darion Smalley- Placed 3rd in the 100m & 7th in the 200m (Honorable Mention All State)
*The 4x100m relay team composed of Dennis Carline, Calvin Curry, Larry Kemp, Darion Smalley, Keleb Ford & Joseph Brinton Placed 5th (Honorable Mention All State)
*Simone Reynolds- Placed 5th in the Javelin (Honorable Mention All State)
*Dennis Carline- Placed 7th in the Triple Jump and 8th in the Javelin (Honorable Mention All State)
